Measure

Send a photo and a rough width, or we come and measure. Every stump is priced by the inch across the cut, roots and access noted.

Grind

Buried lines get marked through SC811 first. Then the wheel takes the stump about six inches below the soil, and the grindings go back in the hole.

Plant

Top the spot with soil once the chips settle, then seed or lay sod. Our guide covers what to do in the weeks after.

Before we grind

How deep do you grind?

About six inches below the soil for a lawn, which is enough to seed or sod over. If you plan to plant a tree, pour a patio or set a fence post in the same spot, tell us and we grind deeper.

What happens to the grindings?

They go back into the hole and get raked level, so the spot is filled rather than left as a pit. Most stumps make more chips than the hole holds, so ask on the quote if you want the extra hauled away or spread in your beds.

Do I need to be home?

No. If the stumps are easy to find, the gate is unlocked and pets are inside, we can work while you’re out and text you when it’s done.

Can you get into a fenced backyard?

Usually, yes. Measure the narrowest gate or gap on the way to the stump and put it on the quote, along with any steps or steep slope, so we bring the right machine.

Will the stump grow back?

Grinding below grade takes out the root crown, so most trees don’t come back. Sweetgum and tree-of-heaven can send up suckers from the roots for a season or two; mowing them off usually wears them out.

Do you call 811 first?

Yes, we request an SC811 locate before grinding. 811 only marks public utility lines, so point out anything private: irrigation, an invisible dog fence, a septic line or wiring to a shed or lamp post.
