Stump work around Salem

Salem sits in the foothills of northern Oconee County, close to both Lake Keowee and Devils Fork State Park on Lake Jocassee. The land is hilly and heavily wooded, and many homes sit on lots cut out of hardwood and pine forest.

Stumps here tend to come from opening up a house site, widening a drive, taking out trees that died or leaned, or cleaning up after storms. White oak, red oak, tulip poplar and loblolly pine are all common, and on a wooded lot the stumps can be big.

Steep lots and long driveways

Getting to the stump is often the hardest part of a Salem job. Gravel drives climb and switch back, house sites are cut into slopes, and the stump you want gone may be well below the house.

On a slope, grinding is the right choice almost every time. It leaves the lateral roots holding the soil while they decay, instead of opening a hole of loose red clay for the next storm to wash downhill. Our guide to stump grinding on lake and slope lots covers erosion care after the work.

If you’re not here full time

If your Salem place is a second home, or you’re between visits, you don’t need to be there. Send photos with a tape measure across each stump, plus a wider shot of the route from the drive. Mark the stumps with paint or flags and leave the gates open, and we can work while you’re away.

Leave a few working days for the SC811 locate we request before grinding. SC811 doesn’t mark private lines, so tell us where any power run to a shed, a well or a dock goes.

Storm stumps on wooded lots

Wooded foothill lots tend to collect storm stumps. Hurricane Helene caused widespread tree damage across the Upstate in late September 2024, and storms like it can uproot whole trees from soaked ground. An uprooted root plate on a slope needs extra care, because it can tip back into its hole once the trunk is cut off. Our guide to stump grinding after a storm covers the order of work.

  • The grade of the driveway, and whether there’s room to turn a truck and trailer around.
  • Gate codes or locked gates, and who can open them.
  • Where the stumps sit relative to the house: above, below or level.
  • Rough sizes, measured across the widest part of each stump at ground level.

Lake lots near Salem

On the Keowee side, Duke Energy manages the shoreline, and vegetation in the shoreline buffer may need approval before it’s removed. Many lake communities also have their own review rules. Our Lake Keowee page has more on shoreline jobs.

Salem questions

Can a stump grinder get up a steep gravel driveway near Salem?

Often, but it depends on the grade, the width and the turns. Send a photo of the driveway along with the stump photos, and note any tight switchbacks or soft shoulders. That lets us judge access before the day.

Can you grind stumps at my Salem property if I don't live there?

Yes. We can quote from photos and a rough measurement, and work while you're away if the stumps are marked and the gates are open. A neighbor or caretaker who can open a locked gate on the day is a help.

Should I grind every stump on a wooded lot?

Usually not. Grind the stumps in the yard, along the driveway and anywhere you walk or mow, and leave the ones in the woods to rot. That keeps the cost down and the hillside stable.
