How stump grinding works

We grind stumps below the soil so you can mow, seed or plant right over the spot.

About $3 an inch across, with a $125 minimum per visit.

What stump grinding is

A stump grinder uses a spinning wheel fitted with hardened teeth to chew a stump into chips, working down until the wood is below the soil. The roots beyond the stump stay in the ground, where they die and slowly rot. What’s left is a shallow bowl of grindings and soil that can be leveled, seeded or planted.

It’s the quickest, least disruptive way to get rid of a stump. The lawn around it stays as it was, apart from some chips to rake up.

When you need it

Most people call after a tree service has taken a tree down and left the stump. Other common reasons:

  • The stump is in the mowing path or a play area.
  • It keeps sending up sprouts.
  • It’s close to the house, where a rotting stump can feed termites.
  • You’re selling, renting out or relandscaping and want a clean yard.
  • A storm took the tree and left a stump or root plate behind.

If something structural is going in the spot, like a footing, pool or slab, read stump grinding vs stump removal first. Full removal may be the better fit.

How the day goes

Before. You send a photo of the stump with a tape measure across it, plus a wider shot showing access, and we quote from that. We request an SC811 locate before grinding, which marks public utility lines. You flag the private lines that 811 doesn’t cover, like irrigation, invisible dog fence, septic laterals or a power run to a shed.

On the day. We get the machine to the stump, grind it down and rake the grindings back into the hole, or load them up if you’ve asked for haul-off. You don’t need to be home if the stumps are marked and the gates are open.

After. The spot settles as the buried wood breaks down. Our guide on what to do after stump grinding covers topsoil, seeding and sod timing for Upstate lawns.

How deep we grind

For lawns, we grind about 6 inches below the soil by default. That leaves room for topsoil and grass, and for a mower to pass without catching anything. If you plan to plant a shrub or tree in the spot, or lay pavers or a patio, ask and we’ll go deeper.

What affects the price

Stump grinding is usually priced by the inch across the stump, with a minimum for any visit. The main things that move a quote are:

  • Diameter, measured across the widest part at ground level.
  • Wood type, since dense hardwoods grind slower than pine.
  • Surface roots, which are a separate job. See surface root grinding.
  • Access, including gates, slopes, steps and soft ground.
  • How many stumps are done on one visit.
  • Whether the grindings stay or get hauled away.

Stump grinding, answered

How deep do you grind a stump?

For lawns we grind about 6 inches below the soil by default. If you plan to plant in the spot, or lay pavers or other hardscape, we can go deeper on request. Tell us what's going there when you ask for a quote.

What happens to the grindings?

We rake them back into the hole unless you ask us to haul them off. They make good mulch for beds, but if the spot is going back to lawn you'll want to replace most of the top layer with topsoil.

Do I need to be home when you grind?

No. If the stumps are marked with paint or flags and the gates are open, we can work while you're not there. Flag any private lines, like irrigation or invisible dog fence, before the day.
